Some people can not stand the odor of cigars. I don’t know if it’s one of those “acquired tastes” or if it’s growing up around that smell, but I don’t mind it. In fact, now that smell takes me back to my childhood in Union City. My step-grandfather smoked cigars regularly, I remember him instantly whenever I smell cigar smoke. Although he was not without considerable flaws, to me he was always more than good, always treating me as his own flesh and blood.
I don’t recall how old I was, (but certainly too young to smoke), when I stole one of his cigars and smoked it in the apartment before he got home. I enjoyed it, but not enough to pick it up as a habit, perhaps I was really just enjoying doing something I knew I wasn't supposed to. I felt like I had gotten away with something really naughty. Looking back, he probably smelled the scent of cigar when he got home, but he probably let me get away with it. I think he might even have been proud of me.
