Usually I have a very concrete idea for a painting, a very specific message or aesthetic that I'm trying to capture. Sometimes I just let the creative current of a glass of wine carry me along. There are a lot of artists I admire and whose work I try to emulate. "Confieso que he vivido" was inspired by one of Douglas Flynt's paintings. I didn't want to make an exact copy of it, just try to capture some of its aesthetics. So I gather my favorite bull statue as a stand in for the lion, and it suggests the Concha y Toro (Shell and Bull) wine bottle, which suggests a Chilean author and poet Pablo Neruda, which suggests using the title of one of his books for the title of my painting and along the way I see a picture of him smoking a pipe, and before I know it, the painting has basically painted itself.
And just to be clear, I do not condone bull fighting, and that is not in any way shape or form what this painting is about.
